ITINERARY IN THE BASILICA
BELOW WE PROPOSE AN ITINERARY IN SIX STAGES THROUGH THE BASILICA TOWARDS THE TOMB OF THE APOSTLE
1. THE PAULINE DOOR
‘When I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord’ 2 Cor 2:12
Enter through the Pauline Door and make a commitment to follow Paul and become a missionary apostle yourself.
2. IN THE BASILICA
‘It is a faithful saying: for if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him’ 2 Tim 2: 11
Walk around and admire the Basilica where, beneath your feet, so many Christians who have followed in the footsteps of the Apostle are buried.
3. IN FRONT OF THE TOMB
‘Pray without ceasing’ 1 Thes 5:17 Pray in front of St Paul’s sarcophagus which has recently been exposed and contemplate the chain with which the Apostle was imprisoned in Rome. This chain exhorts us to be linked to Christ. Sing the hymns and litanies of St Paul (you can download them at the bottom of the page)
4. THE ‘CONFESSIO’ AREA
‘For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.’ Rom 10:10
Pray for the Pope, successor of Peter and Paul, and for the whole Church and make your confession to receive the spiritual benefits promised to each person.
5. IN THE APSE
‘But the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.’ Rom 8:26
Participate in the prayers of the monks, in the singing of the litanies of St Paul (listen to the audio files at the bottom of the page) and in the prayers of the other Christian communities
6. IN THE CHAPEL OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
‘Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men’ 2 Cor 3:2 Attend Mass, reflect and meditate on the letters of the Apostle Paul
