Bulletin N° 10 - Year II THUS THE POPE OPENED THE SYNOD IN ST PAUL’S BASILICA.
-- Hundreds of Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops taking part in the work on the Word of God in the life and mission of the Church gathered around the tomb of the Apostle.
To rediscover the centrality of the Word of God and to constantly deepen our understanding of it. That was the invitation issued by Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday October 5th during his homily for the Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls for the opening of the XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops focused on the theme ‘The Word of God in the life and mission of the Church’. Never before had a Synod been inaugurated outside of St Peter’s Basilica. Thus the choice of the Basilica dedicated to the Apostle of the Gentiles, desired by the Holy Father, was highly symbolic, both to emphasise the coincidence with the Pauline Year which the Pope proclaimed and also to emphasise the figure of St Paul, the first missionary of the Gospel in Asia Minor and in Europe. |
